Back in the 1920s, to help airmail pilots navigate across the county, a series of beacons were built by the Postal Service stretching from San Fransisco and Los Angeles to New York. Four of the concrete arrows that helped pilots navigate from LA to Salt Lake City are still in existence here in southern Utah and a fifth, our featured drive this week, is just a few miles outside of the state, atop Mormon Mesa west of Mesquite.

In the 1930s as water from the Colorado River began to pool up behind the recently completed Hoover Dam, residents of the small town of St. Thomas, Nevada began to abandon their homes and businesses. As the water levels rose and Lake Mead began to fill, the town was flooded and eventually lay under about 80 feet of water when the lake reached full pool. 

But as a result of the lower levels of water in Lake Mead, the ghost town of St. Thomas has emerged from beneath the waters and the cooler months of the year offer the best times to visit this amazing piece of history. And for that reason, we’re featuring it as our Sunday Drive this week.

This week our Sunday Drive features Old Irontown, Utah’s first ghost town. The towns of Parowan and Cedar City were founded in 1851 in an effort to support the mining and production of iron in what would become Iron County. A few years later, a town closer to the mine sites had sprung up, but less than a decade after it was founded, the iron mining had proved unprofitable and the town had been abandoned, making Old Irontown Utah's first ghost town.
