Sunday Hike - Yant Flats

Forget the crowds and discover the captivating beauty of the Candy Cliffs, also known as the Yant Flat Trail. This 3.4-mile adventure whisks you away to a surreal world of marbled orange and white sandstone formations, swirling and layered like a dreamscape of candy cane stripes.

Imagine escaping the throngs of tourists and having this geological wonderland practically to yourself. Unlike its more popular counterparts, the Candy Cliffs offer a secluded experience, especially during weekdays. But don't let the moderate length fool you – the reward is more than worth the effort. The panoramic views from the main viewpoint are nothing short of breathtaking, leaving you speechless as you gaze upon the vibrant tapestry of sculpted sandstone.

Planning your trip to this hidden gem is simple. Nestled near St. George in Southern Utah, the trailhead is accessible via a scenic drive – just be prepared for a bumpy adventure on the final stretch. The hike itself is moderate, with a manageable elevation gain, making it perfect for adventurers of all levels. Remember, though, there are no amenities at the trailhead, so pack accordingly with water, food, and sun protection.

Be sure to download offline maps of the trail beforehand, as there are no markers and the initial paths can be confusing. You can find the hike on All Trails...

Opting for a sturdy vehicle like an SUV is recommended for navigating the bumpy dirt roads, although sedans might manage in good conditions. And be prepared – you might have limited or no cell service, so be prepared to hike in case of car trouble and consider bringing an alternative communication method like a Garmin GPS with an SOS feature.

For an unforgettable experience, time your visit for sunset. Witness the candy-colored cliffs bathed in the golden glow, amplifying their mesmerizing beauty. And if you're feeling adventurous, don't just stop at the main viewpoint. Scale down the canyon and explore the intricate formations up close, adding mileage and unparalleled panoramas to your journey.

To get there, you can head north on Cottonwood Springs Road on the north side of I-15 just across from the Red Cliffs Mall. After about 15 miles you'll find the small parking area for the trailhead. The Cottonwood Springs Road also loops back around to the ghost town of Silver Reef and the town of Leeds if you keep heading north. Consider taking the long way home and stopping for dinner and some of the best Mexican food you've ever had at Casa Tequilana.

Remember, respect is key. Leave No Trace by packing out all your trash and sticking to designated trails. This way, future explorers can continue to marvel at the unspoiled beauty of the Candy Cliffs. So lace up your boots, embrace the adventure, and prepare to be amazed by this hidden gem in Southern Utah!
