Sunday Drive - Cedar Breaks
Our Sunday Drive this week features some of the most spectacular scenery in southern Utah, Cedar Breaks National Monument.
In winter, the white snow, the green pines, and the red sandstone formations combine to create a breathtaking view.
However, the roads through the park are closed during winter, so one of the best ways to see Cedar Breaks this time of year is by taking a hike on snowshoes.
The National Park Service even offers guided snowshoe walks on Saturdays and Sundays through March. Snowshoes and poles are provided, although reservations are required. Reservations can be made by emailing CedarBreaksInfo@nps.gov or by calling 435-986-7120.
The guided walks take about 90 minutes and involve a one mile snowshoe walk and a formal ranger program at the halfway point.
If you’re a little more adventurous and would rather explore on your own, there are plenty of options.
You can follow the trials in your snowshoes on your own and if you don’t own a pair you can always rent from one of the ski shops in town or from the Cedar Sports Shop in Cedar City.
There are also plenty of snowmobile trials to explore and options in Brian Head for rentals if you don’t own a snowmobile of your own.
You’ll want to bundle up and stay on the designated trails but the views at the end of your Sunday Drive and your snowshoe or snowmobile adventure are worth the effort it takes to get there.
There’s a very handy list of directions that will get you to Cedar Breaks no matter where you’re coming from on the Park Service’s website at https://www.nps.gov/cebr/planyourvisit/directions.htm
And we’ve included a handy list of links that will help you plan your visit and get you on the trial to seeing those spectacular views!
